Diabetes
Between 1980 and 2014, the number of people with diabetes increased from 108 million to 422 million. The prevalence of diabetes is increasing faster in low- and middle-income countries than in high-income countries.
Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot efficiently utilise the insulin produced. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood glucose levels. A common consequence of uncontrolled diabetes is hyperglycaemia – or high levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood – which over time leads to serious damage to many body systems, especially the nervous system and blood vessels.
Symptoms of diabetes can include fatigue, increased thirst, constant hunger, weight loss and frequent urination.
Treatment for diabetes includes controlling blood sugar levels, regulating diet, physical activity, and in some cases, taking insulin or other medications.
Regular medical monitoring and good lifestyle management can prevent complications and keep sugar levels stable.
