What Is Snoring?

Snoring is an unpleasant gurgling sound which is made in a phase of deep sleep. Normally, falling asleep should be silent while natural changes in breathing can be observed which can include its acceleration during the fast phase. If a specific low-frequency vibration appears and  lasts all night or a significant part of it, it is known as  snoring. Both adults (30%) and children (up to 10%) suffer from it!

Types of Snoring

There is light snoring which does not require treatment and the serious pathology characterized by a loud, sharp bubbling or whistling or even a growl. In the latter case, snoring can be a manifestation of a dangerous disease associated with the repeated, but short-term cessation of breathing during a night’s rest.

Causes of Snoring

The causes of snoring are quite clear. First of all there is the abnormal narrowing of the pharynx due to its excessive drop in tone in a relaxed state of body or due to injuries (there are also genetic anomalies!). The lumen of the airways becomes so small that it is difficult for air to pass through its upper airways. Muscular pushing with the force of inhalation and exhalation causes friction of air against the soft palate – the epiglottis, the root of the tongue and pharyngeal tissues. The process of such difficult breathing is accompanied by wheezing vibrations which create a strong noise.

Dangers of Untreated Snoring

If left untreated snoring can cause the pathological collapse of the pharynx which can be fatal due to the complete closure of airways and cause acute hypoxia and suffocation during sleep.
